To paraphrase the adage, many many problems begin with memory. Try swapping out what's in with known working memory or take out one of the sticks, to see if it boots. You would need to play around with this, but it could be the heart of the problem.

Open Firmware is what controls the boot up of the computer. It is there regardless of what OS you are booting into be it X, 9, Linux, etc.
