i'd try another drive, it sounds like the motor drive circuitry could be
dying and occasionally shutting down when it gets too hot, i've got a
24x drive with that problem.  unfortunately, the motor control chip
isn't available, nor is data on it so it's a door stop even though i'm a
tech.  it's never good if a cdrom drive keeps spinning up and spinning
down, something is wrong, probably with the drive.  make sure your media
are clean and that the cdrom is clean.  of course you should also unplug
and replug the cable in case it's just a loose connection.  i've never
had problems booting off non apple cdroms or running programs off them,
even with an ancient 2x scsi drive so i'm not sure what's happening.
