How much free space is available on the partition into which you are
installing the updates?

I can't remember, are you installing it on a Beige G3, on a HD that's larger
than 8 GB? If so, you should install OS X on a partition contained
*entirely* in the first 8 GB of the HD.

But, come to think of it, you were running OS X before. If you can't get it
to work, and no-one here remembers a solution to your problem, do a complete
reformat of the HD and start from scratch.
