I use Maxtor drives exclusively.  I install hundreds of drives a year.  I
have the least problems with Maxtor. Western Digital are the worst, and IBM
are the 2nd best.  Let me ask you a few of questions.

Define "belly up."  What were the symptoms?  How do you know it is dead?
What utilities did you use...please don't say Norton Disk Doctor.  Can you
see the drive using Apple's Drive Setup utility?

If you choose to return the drive you will have no problems.  Maxtor has a
very good return policy.  I have only had to return Maxtor drives twice,
but both times I got to a rep in less than 5 minutes and had a new drive
(in both instances they sent a larger one than I returned) in 2-3 days.
