I can't count the number of failed Maxtor drives I tossed out, replaced them all with either WD or Fujitsu and never had a problem. It was always fun to hear the customer describe the sound of a marble in a spray-paint can emanating from their computer. The thing is, hardware manufacturers have an expected failure rate. As much as 10-30% of their products are expected to fail. They know it, and it is acceptable to them. Who you have good or bad experience with is the luck of the draw. Same with support/service. Every company has their bad techs, and their good techs; and sometimes their good techs have a bad day (as those of us working in the tech field can attest to). My personal favorites are Quantum (never had one fail, never bought a used one that didn't work), Seagate (same, with one exception), and WD. As for support/service, Seagate seems to win out in my opinion. Their RMA system is entirely web-based, and you can tell by entering your Serial# whether it's under warranty. Maxtor (who now owns the Quantum drive tech) has a similar system, though it is more difficult at times to discern what numbers they want off the drive. Bottom line, pick one. Any one. You may be better off looking for a local store (Staples, CompUSA, etc.) where at least you can have them deal with the RMA and they might just give you the replacement drive the same day.
