I wouldn't bother with OS X based on your mothers needs, OS 9.1, or even 8.6 will run much better on a 233, even if you clock it up to 300Mhz OS X will still be slow. I have a 333Mhz beige with a Rage 128 Pro video card and an ATA/66 card, and OS X, while usable, is much much less responsive than OS 9.1.
