I joined the Apple fold _specifically_ for OS X. :)  You're right that 
there is a performance hit, and it is very noticeable (at least until 
you get used to the speed difference) on a G3.  That didn't stop me, 
however, from running OS X (and Dreamweaver, 4D Client, and Timbuktu in 
Classic) on a G3/300 with only 192MB of RAM.  Yeah it was slow, but 
since I "switched" for OS X, I didn't care.

OS X itself (and native apps) weren't really slow -- slowness was 
experienced with Classic apps when compared to how they ran in OS 9.  
They were a little slow, but not unacceptably so.

It's all in what you want I guess. :)
