The A1 works in some models doesn�t in others.
There tons of reviews on the A1 there.
Its an old drive so you have to go back to a few pages where the older
drives lie. 
The 1611 is the only Sony Ive had reliably work with my old b&w.
For compatibility reasons, spend a little more cash and get a firewire drive
or an actual Apple drive.
My G3 would not boot from a system cd (or Norton or any cd for that matter),
and would actually lock up and not skip it and boot from the hard drive as
well. 
Toast worked sometimes, not others.
But it did show up and was listed as supported in the Apple System Profiler.
It was a very confusing issue. So I took it back and luckily the store I
bought it at had stock of the 1611's still so I got one of those...
No 24x but the box said Mac on it and was worth it.
Also, when it comes support time, watch what Sony does when you tell em you
put it in a Mac hehe..
