Which they obsoleted long ago. And *said* they were going to obsolete, giving everyone more than fair notice. None of their computers for years now have had Local talk. They build and develop their OS for the computers they sell *now*, not the computers they sold 3 years ago. That OSX run on computers they sold 3 years ago (and earlier) is mere gravy from their point of view, but the overidding concern is getting it to run right on the stuff they have *now*. They are going to start selling > machines that won't run anything but X, which is unfriendly to power users and > is only a business tactic, not something that frees the designers, as far as I > can tell. Define 'unfriendly to power users', please. It is a power users wet dream of an OS, imnsho. Classic will run just fine on the new systems. Unless you define 'power user' as 'Quark User' :-/... power users tend to be at the cutting edge, not hanging in the past with obsolete equipment. > They sold the original X versions then sold it again with Jaguar (though they > gave them to teachers, thank you very much...I appreciate that one.) Even if > Jaguar is a major upgrade it doesn't appear so to a consumer, unless you admit > that pre Jaguar was beta that you paid for. They sold 7.6, then they sold 8.0, then they sold 8.5, then they sold 9.0. I don't remember hearing anything near this stupendous gnashing of teeth about it at the time as I am over Jaguar. In the same time fram Microsoft sold Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT 4, Windows 2000, Windows XP Home and Windows XP Professional. (You want pissed, you don't see the looks on the faces of faculty members who walk in with their shiny new PC's only to be told they need to spend an additional $200 on XP Pro, because XP Home does not connect to Windows domains, so they can't get to the file servers here. ) You got it, just as Apple's consumer level OS introduced seamless access to Windows business networks, Microsoft *eliminated* it from their consumer level offering...) Apple screwed up. They *should* have labelled Jaguar as 10.5 instead of 10.2. (of course, then they'd be that much closer to OS X 11.0, which is, I suspect, the reason for the baby-step upgrade numbers. They're gonna want to milk the X for quite a while. I really doubt we're ever going to see Mac OS XI, barring a sudden revival of ancient Roman traditions in popular culture...) That's a much clearer indicator of the difference between 10.1 and 10.2. They made you buy 10.0, 10.1 was nearly free. (It *was* free if you went to an Apple dealer and got the disk in person), so so far you've *had* to buy 10.0 and 10.2. > > As it stands, I spend a lot of time switching between X and 9 (not Classic) > because tools or hardware I need work in one and not the other. This is a pain. So was dealing with the PowerPC upgrade. So is dealing with *anything* in the computing universe. You have three options: deal and move on, use old stuff, or go buy a PC...no one is holding a gun to anyone's head. Your beef isn't with Apple, it's with those companies that haven't gotten their erm, fertilizer together to get a OSX compliant upgrade out the door. If your tools don't work with X, maybe you need new tools or you just need to get off the treadmill. Stick with an old Mac for the stuff that won't run on the new. It has long been a fact of the computing industry that upgrades are a treadmill, once you're off the treadmill, it's painful to get back on. That Mac users are able to stave off the hard work on that treadmill as long as we can is a testament to the value of their system...but please...the last Localtalk capable systems were sold in 1999. -- Bruce Johnson University of Arizona College of Pharmacy Information Technology Group Institutions do not have opinions, merely customs -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
