You can install either way. And you will be able to start up in either X or
9, and you can run Classic apps either way. But if you put OS 9 in the same
partition as OS X, then do you have a use for the 2nd partition? For Data?
For Apps or both? For Scratch? A lot depends on the sizes you've given
your partitions.

One big advantage of putting OS 9 in the 2nd partition, along with your OS 9
applications and data, is that when you upgrade your OS X to Jaguar or a
later version 10.X or something, you will be able to wipe the X partition
clean and do the new install without having to touch whatever you have in
the 2nd partition. You could even have your OS X applications in a separate
partition, with or not with the OS 9 stuff. Just be sure you back up any
mail files and other data and apps that you put in the same partition with
OS X before upgrading the System.
