Al, this is actually my plan. Thanks for the heads up on the bootable aspect.
I am printing your entire memo for future reference. Many thanks yet again.

About RAM: I am just now realizing this can be an issue. I can ask
Macwarehouse what brand was installed in the G4 originally - the new
RAM is PowerUser brand. I have had excellent service over 10 years
from them so tend to trust, but one should always keep ones eyes open.

I decided to update 10.1 to Jaguar and see how it behaves. If it is also flaky,
I will look further to see what is going on.

What about Poweruser? I am printing out the recommendations for Crucial
and OWC.

Many thanks to all who responded about OS and software issues. I have
managed to install RAM, update my OS, install all programs and I credit
all of you on the list for your encouragement and information!

BTW, the Adaptec 2906 SCSI card IS WORKING in Jaguar. Interesting,
as it's not supposed to (unless I've confused this with the iMate adapter).
But I successfully copied material from zip to hard drive. So we'll see if
I get to keep this functionality or if it's a reason for flakiness and will
have to go.

Now off to maxing out the iBook with some new RAM as well ... it
won't take Studio MX on the 128 MG it came with, let alone OS X.
