Hello,
I'd like some recomendations on a digital camera in the $200.00 range. There are so many, and the things to look for are so different from a conventional camera. My biggest problem may be a USB port. My G3-mt does not have a built in port. I have a USB card installed that works well for what I am using. Are there any cameras that can work with an external USB port?
Thanks

Wilton

I would take a look at what you can find online and at stores in your price range, then look at www.dpreviews.com and see if they have tech reviews for the models you are considering.

Anything 3 megapixels or higher is fine for most peoples general use, just keep in mind that megapixels aren't everything, good optics are always critical. A 4 or 5 megapixel camera with crappy lenses isn't going to get you anywhere. Money spent on a camera is almost always well spent.

Look for higher optical zooms, rather than digital zooms which are rather pixellated (Sony had the best digital zooms for quite some time, but none I've seen are super, the Sony was the only one I considered "useable") and usually a camera with higher optical zooms also has higher image quality in the lensing overall as well.

Getting images to your laptop doesn't have to require USB, if you get a camera with CF or Smartmedia just buy a $15 adapter for our PCMCIA slot and transfer photos that way (perhaps there are adapters for Sony memory sticks or the other formats now, too). MUCH nicer on the camera battery life than USB transfers.

Anyway try and get something that has a techie review from that web site I mention, to avoid surprises/disappointment. If you want to try and find an older model that might be in the $250 range now, the Olympus 2100UZ has 10X optical zoom and some nice features as well (it's a couple years old).

HTH. Let us know what you decide!
