I can't say enough about Canon cameras. My Brother-in-law has a s100, my sister-in-law in a professional photographer and swears by Canon (she owns an s230), we own an s200. They take short movies. If you can find an s230, I would buy it. Amazon has the s230 for 270. I'd check out deal-mac or the like.
I second this! I had an Olympus C-3030 and a Nikon Coolpix, and Neither hold a candle to my Canon S-200. I would never buy another brand of digital still camera. In fact I just bought one for my brother for x-mas.
When I bought my digital camera one of my criteria was to get one from an established camera maker. I felt between optics and electronics the optics are the critical feature in a digital camera. I bought an Olympus point and shoot, a D-490. I wanted the compact form factor after lugging the the SLR all over. And for my usual purposes , railfan photography, I've found that the range of zoom (3:1) is more important than the maximum telephoto is. I went with Olympus in part because I had an Olympus XA, a little 35mm camera with rangefinder focus and aperture priority exposure control. It had a lot of nice features for a compact camera. My SLR is a Canon A1 and I will definitely be looking at Canon for my Digital SLR, someday.
