Although I do appear to have the correct Rev 2 motherboard chip (646U2-402) I still have some oddities if I connect a second/slave drive to the original IDE controller.
I was able to use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the good B&W's OS10.2.8 partition onto the bad B&W's new drive. Bruce, it was not quite as elegant and simple as you lead me to believe... I had to do a lot of tinkering with various apps. The first time I ran Repair Permissions I think it repaired everything in the system. The repairs zipped past so quickly you could not read them. After a couple of runs of the Repairs all went reasonably well.
I have run DiskWarrior 10.0.3 on all partitions. Discovered something in Disk Warrior: It has the ability to read the S.M.A.R.T features of newer drives and tell you if the drive is sound. That is, if you install Disk Warrior onto the system. (I always ran it from the CD and never noticed that part.)
There are still strange problems with Desktop Rebuild running in OS 9. I don't know why my computer wants to rebuild the desktop in 9... but it wants to rebuild it on all the partitions. The rebuild breaks the ability to boot from 9 into X. I have found a way to fix that problem. If, after an involuntary desktop rebuild in OS 9, I do the following four things, it fixes the problem: (1) boot up in Open Firmware and type "reset-nvram" and hit return, then type "reset-all" then return (2) as the system reboots, boot it into safe mode and run /sbin/fsck -y (3) restart, booting up from the DiskWarrior 3.0.1 CD and run DW (4) restart and run Disk Utility to Repair Permissions. Those four things seem to fix my three week old problem. Oddly enough, if I try running Repair Permissions before the DiskWarrior rebuild I get a panic. Also of note, only the newest DiskWarrior 3.0.1 works. The 3.0 version does not fix the broken link between 9 and X
After I finally got 10.2.8 running on the bad B&W I tried five different times to use CCC to clone the OS 10.2.8 partition onto another (empty) partition. Four attempts at a straight clone, and one with a Disk Image. It would hang, and cause a panic while copying the Applications. It did not hang at the same place each time. Does CCC not work cloning from the start up disk? If not, how does one make a back up? I finally resorted to installing 10.2 onto an empty partition, along with CCC to do the cloning from there. That went quickly and painlessly.
I now have Panther running on the bad B&W too. Yipeee!
I cloned the 10.2.8 partition onto an empty partition, and updated that copy to Panther. I wanted to see how well updating 10.2 to 10.3 worked. I am not as proficient in OSX as most of you, and I would rather not have to sort out all the "stuff" when one does an Archive & Install. Updating was painless. If you are sure all of your various applications are up to date, I recommend it. I had to re-enter the serial number for my screen saver, and reinstall the Clear Dock and Window Shades haxies, and that was it. Most dock items lost their connections, but that was an easy fix.
Ohhhh and the final good news part is that I have it all working with a G4/450 ZIF processor installed. I am not sure what Jaguar and Panther "think" the machine is, maybe a Yikes, but they are both quite accepting of the G4 processor. I am not, however, able to enable the AltiVec part in Classic. The PowerLogic controls are incompatible with launching Classic from inside 10.2 or 10.3 The PL control panel works just fine if you boot up in 9 but not in classic.
Now to f-i-n-a-l-l-y move on to installing the RAID PCI card and drives in this thing and install the OSX Server software.
Thanks all for all the help and suggestions. Perhaps my mishaps will be of benefit to others.
