Okay, this didn't work, the computer still would not boot.  But I also rushed 
Wade's suggestion a bit just to see what would happen resetting the PRAM.  
Now the computer will boot from the CD (OS8.5), but not the HD.  Running 
Drive Setup I can see the HD, but it says it's not mounted.  Tried to mount 
it but is says I cannot mount that volume.  Now what?
