Probably the cheapest deal around with no telco or cable solutions is DirecTV's DirecWay satellite broadband. It now supports Mac's and windooze. All you need is a clear shot at the southern sky. It's not going to make an online gamer happy as there is a latency to satellite, but for just e-mail, browsing, ftp type use it's quite functional and definitely faster.
Satellite is decent if no other option is available, but...
DirecWay's Mac support is ... ROFL ... A dedicated Wintel PC. It runs Hugh's software, plus ICS, so it acts as a slow NAT Router. Their software is, AFAIK, still incompatible with various firewall and anti-virus softwares - so the PC is *vulnerable* to all the viral / port attacks.
Also, last time I looked, DirecWay has some pretty harsh service caps. It throttles you to sub-V.90 speeds if you suck too much for too long. And they start charging by the MB if you exceed your monthly allotment.
