Last time I looked (I'm sure someone will CMIIW on this), the gmail homepage
indicated that gmail was still in the Beta testing stage. I don't think
it's been released to the Great Unwashed yet. When someone "invites" you to
join, they're basically just sending you a link that allows you to sign up,
that's all.

I doubt it. That being said, I must say that I admire Google's marketing
cleverness. I mean, the fact that you have to have an invite to join *does*
create a scarcity of a sort.

You know what? I said the same thing. Then someone on the swap list sent a
link that led to a forum (fark.com) where people were furnishing direct
links to the invites. I thought, "hey, I'll just click on a link and sign
up! Why not?" So I clicked on link after link...only to find out that the
invites they led to had already been taken. To make a long story short, an
hour or two went by while I hunted for something that I could easily have
gotten with an email to a pal. Damn, I felt stupid.

The Crushing Irony was that when I tried to use my WaMcom Mozilla 1.3.1 to
get in, g-mail screetched at me that my (admittedly old) browser wasn't
supported. When I click on the "go ahead anyway" link, it tells me I need
to configure my browser to accept cookies. Um, it *is* configured to do
that.

Well, Doom On You, Google, if you think I'm going to upgrade my browser just
to use your mail service. I know that someone else on one of the lists
mentioned that they were indeed using Mozilla 1.3.1 in conjunction with
g-mail, but to tell the truth, I just kinda lost my motivation when I
realized I'd been played for a total dope.

That, of course, had *never* happened before! ¬_¬

Best,

James Fraser
