Last time I looked (I'm sure someone will CMIIW on this), the gmail homepage indicated that gmail was still in the Beta testing stage. I don't think it's been released to the Great Unwashed yet. When someone "invites" you to join, they're basically just sending you a link that allows you to sign up, that's all.
Not so. You get a full gmail account, with 1G of storage.
