OK, so here's me eating my words...

Some time in the not-to-distant-past I commented on how my 20 Gig IBM DeskStar was doing great after 3 years, 2 Macs and several OSes...

Recently it's taken to squeaking. Yes, squeaking. At random intervals-- usually involving heavy disk-thrashing-- it kind of goes, "Click-eep"... Or sometimes, "tok-tok-tok-eep-click".

I'm sure the sound is not coming from the speaker-- I went a whole day with the sound off to make sure. It is possible that the sound is coming from some other internal component but I'm at a loss as to what else it could possibly be.

Often, but not always, it then hangs. Sometimes forever. If I force-reboot, sometimes it doesn't come back (gray screen at start-up). The only thing that seems to work consistently is powering down and then powering back up.

Sometimes (if I start up from the CD) disk utility doesn't see the disk-- again, powering down and then powering back up seems to solve that.

I'm (hopefully) all backed up-- does it pay to try a nuke-&-rebuild? or just ride it out and start looking at pricing for a new hard drive?

Any favorite HDs? Anything to stay away from (other than IBM DeathStars)? G4 Sawtooth, 512 MB Ram, OS X 10.3.6, probably-soon-to-be-dead 20 Gig HD.

TIA,
Katzy

ps-- possibly related to the squeak: sometimes, when I'm sitting just so, the regular "hum" of the mac throbs ever-so-slightly "HMM-hmm-HMM-hmm". There was a time a while back when it was throbbing really loudly, but it seemed to stop after I took out my second HD (the drives were apparently spinning at almost the same speed-- just slightly out of synch and that caused harmonics or something)
