Hi there

Some years back, the whole Amiga community was discussing this issue. Like what Apple did some time back, they decided to allow other companies to make clones. However a lot of people started making ATX style motherboard, with G3-G4 chips. The boards where very similar to a quicksilver board.

This seemed to be what everyone was looking for, a new lease of life in the product. However, a voice started up with a question that soon had everyone asking the same thing. What makes the machine an Amiga? Is it the general design? The operating system? Personally i thought it was the OS and the user base that made it what it was.

When i stopped using the machine some years ago, i wanted to swap to Apple. But the price was way out for a seventeen year old. Fast forward to last year, i got fed up with my PC, it was boring. So i bought a very cheap 8200. I later swapped the motherboard for a 8500. I was using OS 9 for most of last year, until i was able to afford a B/W. OSX is great and i think most of all, that is was Apple are. A company that makes products ahead of the game. They come out with things most companies seem to only have on the drawing board.

If Apple can continue to do this, then i think we might get through this transition ok. In my opinion, Apple has always played with it's cards cards close to it's chest. So any new Mac/intel compatible hardware will probably come through apple with its usual high price tag. But will still be uniquely Mac made and not a PC cast off.

I'm afraid that people who think in a year or two's time, that they will be seeing macs going for comparable PC prices. Are possibly going to be in for a disappointment. Like i said, it's my humble opinion. But with Apples record doing it on their own. I fear we won't be seeing the price drop we are all hoping for. But then again who knows eh! This time next year we could have a new version of the Mac Mini going for £150-200!

I also think and believe many will agree with me. That any price drop, will be good for business. The Apple community is still relatively small compared to that of the PC one. And i think it's about time we started nibbling at that community and bringing them over from the dark side of the force *cough* :-P (It is not the writers intention to imply PC's are evil. Just like old people on the freeway, doing 35 in the fast lane aren't),

Good article. I really do hope Intel and Apple work together to make nice processors. Maybe theyll use the Altivec? And, Intel has the DEC Alpha team working for them, who made the first 64 bit desktop processor in the mid 90s. And Im glad to be reassured that Apple wont become a Dell like company. But I hope they keep the CPU upgrades easy. And I hope they use and sell ATX motherboards.

Sounds to me like you're talking out of both sides of your mouth at the same time! First you say, "I'm glad to be reassured that Apple won't become another Dell". Then you say, "I hope they use and sell ATX motherboards". Think about that a minute........................ If Apple starts using generic ATX motherboards and other generic PC components, then what will that make them? Right, just another Dell! If Apple just starts stuffing generic PC parts in Apple-designed cases, other than OS X, what will make the "Macintel" anything different than a Dell or a Gateway?
