My two cents here is that we keep these old machines running primarily for
fun, not as a good investment of your time (a lot, likely) and money
(usually little). If you can get some real usefulness of them, as most of
us do, the better. But I'd agree with you that there are better options for
real-life environments.
It could be worse, you could be hung on using NT for DEC Alpha.
Don't trash 'em. The bug might return. It's fun!
