I don't know how serious or extensive you want your pdf database to be, I've experimented with Appleworks Database and it's not very versatile. Everything is in one flat file. Now if you want to be able to do some actual work with your database and be able find things based on certain parameters and not necessarily knowing the full file name then FileMaker 8 Pro is the way to go. Prior to switching to Apple in 2001, I was a HUGE fan of Microsoft Access and it's one of the things that I REALLY miss that was left out in the Mac version of Office. I've even run an SQL server in the past on Windows 2000 server and did a fairly well job. Database management is one of my 'passions'. I bit the bullet last year and bought FileMaker 8 Pro and have to say that it's even easier to use than Access. Only drawback is that you can't query the database with SQL unless it's sitting on a Filemaker Server (which costs a LOT).....but that in no way cripples it. You can still do intelligent queries and obtain accurate results. I'd say that FileMaker is a lot easier to use in MANY ways over Access. The funny thing about it is: once you have it, you find that you have a LOT more uses for it than you thought. I highly recommend FileMaker 8 Pro!

I don't think you should have to buy AppleWorks.

Did your copy of Panther come with Classic (OS 9) install discs? If
so, there should be a copy of AppleWorks for OS 9 on one of those
discs.

Install that. Once installed, you can use Apple's website to freely
update it to the OS X version.

I actually never knew I had a copy of AppleWorks myself until last
year I was poking around on the OS 9 discs that came with my Jaguar. I
installed it, and then updated it via Apple's website to the OS X
version.

As for it's database capabilities, I've never used that part of the
program. But if you've got it, install it and see. :)
