I didn't know that. I've always used Office from 'you know who'.
I'll maybe look into it....probably won't, as I already own FileMaker
Pro 8. But it's worth considering. But do you all, more or less,
agree that the database in Appleworks just doesn't suit the needs of
a person who needs to set up a serious, useable database? But thank
you for the info on OpenOffice and MySQL. I was under the impression
that it was only for web based applications.
I know that this is an unrealistic expectation, but I would have
really liked if MS had ported Access along with Office. It was a
very good database app and you could use SQL queries on it easily.
You can't do that on a FileMaker database unless you want to invest
in the FileMaker Server app which is "BIG BUCKS"

You can interface with MySQL thru OpenOffice.

This is true, but who is going to develop the web application to
use with the database? I have been able to link a MySQL database
to a web application using GoLive from Adobe but this is also a
very expensive application. Short of that, the user would have
to take a course on some of the new web technologies and use of
HTML and XML and a few other things. This is not a practical
solution. You're also assuming that the person has a working
knowledge of SQL. MySQL is free and is VERY useful but not for
the average user.
FileMaker still gets my vote.
