This Filemaker web page has a reference to a list of supported formats for importing. It doesn't mention PDF files.

Filemaker Pro can insert pdf files into a container field, but then it isn't a searchable document. The pdf's could be translated to another format for importing. Sounds like a lot of work to me.

I suggest checking out Devonthink, a database with several versions that can import pdf files with no setup. It also uses artificial intelligence (so I have read) to cross-reference data. I think that it would be the most economical as it would save a lot of time.

What Goes In -- For DEVONthink to search on a document's contents, it must be in a format from which words can be extracted. Such formats include plain text, RTF, HTML, PDF (which DEVONthink parses using pdftotext, or TextLightning if you have it), and even Microsoft Word files (now that Panther natively converts these to RTF).

DEVONthink Personal Edition 1.9.3 uses Tiger's new PDFKit engine to display PDF, PostScript and EPS files, highlights found text passages directly in the PDF, supports annotations as well as converting PDFs to rich text documents without the need for TextLightning.

Subject: [G] Most economical database
Date: Fri, 27 Jan 2006 16:56:52 -0800

I've just realized I need to put my PDF files -- I accumulate a LOT of
them during research -- into a searchable database on my computer. This
leads to questions:

1. Has anyone made a product just for this purpose?

2. Other than FileMaker, what are the options for an OS X database?

3. Is there a good one for free or cheap?

4. Does the OS X version of AppleWorks contain a decent database? Would
this make buying AppleWorks worthwhile?

I use OS X Panther on a beige G3 device.

Any help is appreciated.
