Now, that the Intel Macs are here, what does Bruce think about the future of Mac now?

No different, actually, OS X is still the incentive to buy Mac hardware. That excerpt was from another endless fanboi discussion over Apple selling OS X to run on any computer

(Ie: "If Apple just started seling OS X for any computer they'd become the richest computer company evar!!!!. Of course me and all my friends would get it off torrents somewhere, only losers buy software!")

I'll admit the Intel switch did catch me by surprise, but Apple's still a Computer company, not a Software company, and is one of the biggest computer companies in the world.

Isnt this almost the same as licensing clones?

NO, because the clones were legal. Apple can and will take measures (hardware and legal) to ensure that their OS remains on their systems..see their recent legal action against the OSx86 website <http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/02/17/ AR2006021701911.html>

(when everyone and his brother can port X w/no trouble to non-apple hardware, wont apple see their profits sink?

Well, it's far from clear that everyone and their brother will be able to do it. It becomes that easy, yes, Apple's profits may dip, and in that case, they'll have to take more affirmative measures to stop this from happening. Unfortunately, this means Windows-like registration of the OS or TPM tying the copy of the software to the system, instead of the honor system we have today.

Ain't it fun when thieves spoil the party? :-( And that's all these people are, are thieves, imo.

And what about viruses? Rumors (or speculations) here on the G-list tend towards universal viruses.

That's difficult to believe. I've not seen any of these rumors or speculations.

And when is apple going to come up with a decent macintel 12" powerbook? Ingeniously small, eminently portable, and with larger- screen connection should the need arise.

Geez, PATIENCE, willya! We JUST got the 15" models first because that's by far their most popular line. You may like the 12" ones but the majority of their customers like the 15 and 17" ones. We haven't even hit the originally scheduled release dates for any of the models yet...I'll wager the full laptop line is switched over by WWDC.

Those 14/15/17" models quickly outgrow decent backpacks, necessitating special carrying cases/bags/packs.

You must have a very tiny backpack. These <http://www.tucano.it/ITA/ html_esterno/new_folders/frame_folders.htm> sleeves from Tucano are very nice, provide excellent padding for the laptops and lets you toss the laptop into a far more nondescript backpack than a typical computer case.

And gone is small-but-powerful, which I now think are the essentials of portables.

Why, the 12" PPC model is still availablem, and it's not really a slouch.
