Yes, there is a software hack for the G4 iBook. It's called Screen  
Spanning Doctor. Currently your G4 iBook only supports mirroring of an  
external monitor and since the iBook has a 4:3 screen you're only  
offered 4:3 options. With spanning enabled, you'll get the external  
monitor spanned as an extended Desktop and should be offered the  
appropriate resolutions available for it.
