Most external drive enclosures and docks do not have the ability to work with SMART. Most docks/enclosures don't have the firmware to allow SMART info to pass. This is unrelated to usb or firewire or ide or sata. If SMART Utility says the drive is failing, it's failing. It can't tell you how much time you have, it can only mention that signs of failure exist.
