Yes, and when you restore from one of those you spend *HOURS* pawing through masses of duplicate files. I my case, I'd carefully preserved all my data through two "Dammit I can't find anything, time to clean off the desktop and re-arrange stuff" sessions.

It's a bit disconcerting to make a complete backup, knowing you have just a handful of file and folders on your desktop, then restore from the SAME backup, and suddenly seeing mounds and mounds of files on the desktop. :-/
