Maybe there could be a stone somewhere in the game that is used as a sword sharpener? It should take time, though, to sharpen the reusable sword. If this idea makes the game too easy, here's another: If the sword is supposed to break after a while, you know that it will do so when you least want it to, so maybe there should be more than 1 sword that can be found.
