Greetings Philip.

I do see your point about Direct Input and JAWS conflicts. I have, however, managed to make plenty of games that call for Jaws to be asleep to work with it awake, simply by forcing certain keys to bypass their script routines. I can play Shades of Doom and the like with JAWS running with but a few tweaks to the Jaws scripts.

I concur that Jaws output wouldn't necessarily be the best for every occasion, but in a turn-by-turn game such as ADOM or Nethack, Jaws output wouldn't necessarily need to be timed. One would take his turn, receive speech output about the result, then continue the process.

If you elect not to implement it, that is definitely fine, it is by no means a necessity. I was but curious about the viability of such API support.

Kai

Hello Kai,

My main issue with this is not how to implement the functionality, that is simple enough. Rather it is the fact that jaws, as the only screen reader in the bunch as far as I'm aware, blocks keyboard input when DirectInput is being used. I need to use DirectInput for keypresses in BGT as it is by far the fastest and most reliable way to work with the keyboard on Windows. So this leaves me with a bit of a problem. If Jaws is running, the screen reader API calls would work fine but the keyboard wouldn't. If Jaws is shut down or put to sleep, the API calls would not work but the keyboard would. Do you see the problem?

Feel free to get on the forum with this discussion and we will see what some other users there think.

Kind regards,

Philip Bennefall

Subject: [Audyssey] BGT and Screen Reader API's

Greetings list.

anyone know if BGT has any provisions for interacting with the various
screen reader API's? I would, for instance, like to replace a lot of the
SAPI TTS events with direct Jaws speech output, since Eloquence is about 200
times faster than SaPI.

If not, anyone know if this will be slated for a future release?

Kai
