Greetings Valiant.

I tend to dislike pre-recorded speech systems. Although they do deliver the highest naturality, they're also the slowest and least configurable (someone records the lines, you're stuck with the rate they chose to record at). SAPI also doesn't fair very well when sped up; speech becomes very choppy and unattractive. It's for these reasons that I oft prefer Eloquence over SAPI and the like. If only Espeaks sounded better, or that Eloquence / Via Voice were available in SAPI 5 format...

Subject: Re: [Audyssey] BGT and Screen Reader API's

Hi.
There is a high quality prerecorded voiceover system in the works that may or may not be implemented into bgt. If not, it'll be available elsewhere. For the most part, it is not practical to include screen readers in audio game's output. JAWS isn't the only screen reader with the keyboard problems. These problems aren't an indication of bad quality drivers. It just means the screen reader has access to the keyboard at as low a level as the game and is intercepting it for it's own use. NVDA has been specifically constructed so as not to present this problem. Other screen readers pass on the keystrokes, but introduce delays as the reader attempts to do what it has been programmed to do with the arrow keys, but still passes on the orriginal functionality. A good way to get around the problem is to use something other than the arrow keys, but then if the reader is set to echo keypresses, it can be annoying if the screen reader is trying to speak a key when you have that key held down.

It could be that sometime there will be a good use for a screen reader in a BGT based application, but for the time being, I think screen reader support is pointless. Developers should probably either use SAPI, or use recorded voiceovers.

Greetings list.

anyone know if BGT has any provisions for interacting with the various screen reader API's? I would, for instance, like to replace a lot of the SAPI TTS events with direct Jaws speech output, since Eloquence is about 200 times faster than SaPI.

If not, anyone know if this will be slated for a future release?

Kai
