The behavior was to put me at the main menu. When I chose multiplayer
again, I returned to the same location, minus all the equipment I'd gathered
since my last safe zone save.

P.S. I would be cautious about allowing exit and return with full health
anywhere but the zone, since it could be used to bail from a hopeless
situation.

Actually I'm also not sure how pressing escape got you out of the game. You
should have had to arrow to exit game and press enter. Pressing escape
should just bounce you back and forth between the game and the main menu
without ever exiting you.
