No. You just lose it if you hit multiplayer again. I think there is a simple solution.
You hit escape. It takes you to the main menu. you hit multiplayer, and it says something like: "Connection already in progress. Reconnec t?" And it's a yes/no prompt. If you do get into the main menu again, just hit escape again. That's not so clearly explained, and it may be that some people thought you couldn't just return to the game like that...
