Live ebuilds cannot have keywords, so using git repos is not a valid
option. There's not really much to discuss here.

Recompressing all distfiles in gentoo-specific ways is... definitely a
decision. It's a decision that Debian has made, mind you, so it's not
like Gentoo would be breaking new ground here, but frankly I don't
really regard that as fundamentally palatable.
