Sorry if my attempt at a summary was more confusing than the original
messages.
I've created a ticket with test cases, run logs, and a comparison of
the ghdl-mcode and ghdl-gcc messages :

While creating that ticket, I noticed two things:
1) the abnormal exit happens when indexing off the end of an
unconstrained port
2) indexing off the end of a static vector causes an overflow error on
ghdl-mcode, and a bounds error on ghdl-gcc [1]
I will add a separate ticket for integer range messages once I finish
cleaning up the test cases.
