Unfortunately this is not going as well as I had hoped. I am at this moment completely stuck. The problem now is the VITAL packages. The vital95 and vital2000 sources in the GHDL repository are lacking copyright statements, therefore it will be difficult to distribute them in Debian. Tristan found a public domain alternative [1], but unfortunately it is not standards compliant. (GHDL even refuses to compile it into the IEEE library.) [1] http://www.ece.uah.edu/~gaede/cpe526/vhdl_src/vital2.2b/timing_p.vhd Without VITAL packages, GHDL can still be useful, but many models will not compile (e.g. LEON3). I'm not in favor of making a Debian package which has significant limitations compared to upstream GHDL. That will only cause frustration for users who are not aware of those differences. My tentative conclusion is that I can not make an official Debian package until the status of the libraries is resolved. As a temporary solution, I plan to polish my package, then upload it to the Files section on sourceforge as an unofficial Debian package. Nicolas, Ludovic, I'm sorry for wasting your time. I really believed that the package was ready, but it's not. At least I have learned a lot about Debian packaging; maybe there is still hope for me. However, their "front door" may not be the most succesfull way. The purpose of their license desk is to collect fees, not to give stuff away. Does anybody in the GHDL community know someone on the VHDL working group, perhaps from a conference? Those guys may understand the purpose of GHDL better than the people at the license office. It's all very frustrating. There is not really any problem, i.e. IEEE almost certainly does not object to our use of the standard. However without explicit permission to distribute the files, I can not include them in an official Debian package with a good conscience. Joris.
