I agree completely with this sentiment. However, I do not think it makes a good argument for replacing a simle solution with one that causes confusion and problems. Using underscores in filenames is simple; learning how to program around spaces (especially for non-programmers) is confusing, and can cause problems. This is especially true when your legacy software was written with the understanding that spaces were not allowed in filenames (MS-DOS, et. al.) and don't deal well with filenames that have them. It is much easier to teach people to replace spaces with underscores than it is to teach them complicated shell quoting. I have encountered situations where users insist on using spaces in filenames more than often enough to convince me that accomodating one's ability to do this is just not worth the effort.
