Are you sure it's the only way? Mike has a custom map here http://www.econym.org.uk/gmap/custommap.htm which doesn't do that; and he references a utility from Tibor Katelbach which doesn't do that either: everything is calculated. Anyway, the Terms of Service don't allow you to do it, so you shouldn't be doing that.
