This is true, although I would guess that they would add "using the
official API" to the end of that sentence.

I doubt there is a timesaving device, either. It sounds as though you
should be recalculating your custom map in nine-tile squares, or even
reprojecting it completely, which are going to be labour intensive, I
agree. However, if Google really is happy for you to scrape their
tiles, why not ask how to go about doing it? Pamela might comment here
or give a hint about what to do.
