Dear Sister,
Most of all for the schola of the abbey, to deepen gregorian study of
the antiphons and of the office repertoire. (in fact, graduale triplex
is enough for us for the mass songs)
Ok!
Like the Graduale triplex, but I hope for the possibility to add
different writings than Saint Gall and Laon only...
Sure! The input syntax should be able to handle as many forms as
possible, only the fonts will probably be missing...
It depends. For the antiphonale (my first aim), the Hartker manuscript
(Saint Gall notation). But also the Laon and the beneventan will be
precious for other songs.
Ok! So I think handling the beneventan notation is something to do.
In my humble opinion, the best is to use the same gregorio file and add
a second/third and so on encoding. This has the following advantages:
1. All the neumatic writings will be easily allocated on the same syllable
2. We do not have to re-write text for each different neumatic writing
3. It will be possible to add or remove neumatic writings just specifing
or not a command, without having to create a new file.
This could be possible (Elie, correct me if I'm wrong) for instance
using a code like this:
A(gabc)*&(saintgall)&(laon)&(whatever)*ve(gabc)*&(saintgall)&(laon)&(whatever)*
Ma(gabc)*&(saintgall)&(laon)&(whatever)*ri(gabc)*&(saintgall)&(laon)&(whatever)*a(gabc)*&(saintgall)&(laon)&(whatever)*
This is absolutely possible, yes!
I'll aswer here to Fr. Peron and Mr. Klein too:
Here is a proposal that, I think, is well-balanced:
- keeping the good old gabc files we have now
- making a very simple file with the same header style as the gabc
header, but that contains only the neumes, with a bar (|) separating
every syllable, and eventually other signs for synchronization with
spaces (such as /, // or space) in the gabc notation
- having an option in Gregorio to merge the two files in one gabc file
with all the informations
What do you think about this? This way if the alignment between the two
notations is not perfect, we still can modify the merged gabc file, but
in 95% of the cases, we have two separate files...
It would make something like:
myscore.gabc
============
name:My Score;
%%
ab(gh)cd(hf)
myscore-laon.nabc
=================
name:My Score;
manuscript ref: Laon359;
%%
podatus1 clivis4
myscore-merged.gabc
===================
name: My Score;
manuscript-1:Laon359;
%%
ab(gh&podatus1)cd(hf&clivis4)
What do you think?
- do you have the ability of designing a font? (another challenge!)
I think so. And I'll be glad to do this job! :)
This is great! There are already a few fonts available, the first step
will be to explore them in order not to reinvent the wheel, but I'm sure
we'll need font design at some place and I'm sure you'll make a great
font designer!
I've got a well done manual with some useful tables I think could help
for this. "Manuale di canto gregoriano" (authors: Rampi - Lattanzi).
This would be good! Can you send us a scan of the relevant page? I'll
make a mail recapitulating the available documents on the topic when the
discussion will be more advanced.
Thank you,
--
Elie
