Dear all, singing the Liturgy of the Hours in parish presents another problem than just knowing how to sing gregorian from the Antiphonale Romanum.
Think of that : until 1980, the Antiphonale was realised BEFORE the books with only a reading version. But, since the last Council, the books for a read worship were published before the ones for a sung worship. Moreover, we are waiting since 1980 for the Antiphonale Romanum, and nowadays, only 2 books have been published : the Liber Hymnarius (1983) and the Antiphonale Romanum Tome II (2009), which contains only vespers on Sundays and feasts. Fortunately, the St Martin Community has published "Les Heures Grégoriennes" (The Gregorian Hours) with latin and french Liturgy of the hours, with gregorian parts, and it has been approved by Roma as "iuxta typical" … because there was no "typica" at that time ! This 3 books (ordinary, advent and nativity times / Lent and Easter times / saint feasts) are the only form of an Antiphonale Romanum in Ordinary form of the Roman Rit, and only since 2008, nearly 30 years ! after the reform of the Liturgy of the Hours. Therefore, I think that if the hours are not sang in the parish, this is because there was no book yet for that purpose. This is the main reason. Nothing to do with how to sing the Antiphonale Romanum T. II. About singing or reading worship, there is another point. Since the last liturgical reform, there are no more low mass, sung mass nor great mass. There are only the read worship and the sung worship, with common and different books for each. Example : - read mass : you need the missal and the book of the reading which contains the 2 or 3 readings, the psalm and an alleluia verse - sung mass : you need the missal or the Ordo Missae in Cantu, the book of the reading for the 2 or 3 readings, and the Graduale Romanum for all the song, including the Graduale (no psalm in the rubrics for sung mass) and the alleluia. You can see that the only form promoted during years is the read worship : no use of the Graduale Romanum, only the psalm during mass never the Graduale, Sequentia after the alleluia ! (what does Sequentia mean ? ? ? ) And this is the same for the Liturgy of the Hours : only and read version has been promoted. Sung ones are not official, are local versions, so nobody knows them. This is why we need, mainly for the Ordinary Form, Gregorio to be able to publish scores and books. Now, I agree with you about having a tool to edit old neumes to help singing the new Antiphonale Romanum.
