I don't think this has been studied, but my opinion would be as follows:
If a document source is written in the English style (i.e. without the preceding space) TeX can insert the space automatically in the output with appropriate settings. For example adding `\usepackage[french]{babel}` to the preamble will automatically insert the necessary spaces. However, as far as I know (and I could be wrong on this) the reverse is not true. That is, if the preceding space is in the source, then it will always show up in the output. As a result, I would prefer that the source not include the spaces. In this fashion the user can select whether or not they want them to appear via a simple change to the preamble, instead of a laborious find-and-replace.
