Well, I see two possible solutions. 1) if the application has a cursor, which you can find out by pressing insert-control-c, then you might define 2 cursoring keys for the 2 hotkeys which will read the statusline, when pressed. 2) your might define a hyperactive window which can read the statusline when the content of the status line changes
