I couldn't agree more. If you call us, and you're not happy with the response we're giving you, then talk to us about it. We're people too. We're all adults (well, most of us), and we can carry on a discussion. We also have good days, and bad days, just like you. I think this might be a good opportunity to quote from www.gwmicro.com/support:

How to get the most out of your phone call to GW Micro

These suggestions can help all of us in solving problems in a timely manner. The following are not criticisms, but rather, friendly advice. We also are open to suggestions on how to serve you better.

* When reporting a problem try to have as much information as possible. Operating system, application names, version numbers, hardware specs, type of sound card/synthesizer, etc. all go a long way in helping us to solve your problems.

* Humor us a bit; it's been a long day. Try our suggestions out even if you know for a fact that you just did the steps before you called. You would be amazed at the number of users who call us, swearing up and down that they have done specific steps outlined in the Window-Eyes Manual only to find out that they were not done in the first place, or was done and then changed, or mysteriously changed (which can happen from time to time). Even though you may know that you did those steps, we don't unless we can do them with you.

* Be at the computer when you call. Having the computer up and running when you call us makes troubleshooting easier for both you and us. When you're able to actually try the steps while we are guiding, then there's less frustration, and a better chance that the problem will get solved. We understand that this is not always possible, but it would be most helpful to all involved.

* Remember what we talked about. When you send us e-mail, be sure to include previous conversations that we may have had. We go through hundreds of e-mail messages each day, so it is difficult to remember each one. The easiest way to do this is to reply to our messages. That will automatically include our previous e-mail conversation (assuming that your e-mail client is set up this way).

* We may not always have an answer. As wonderful as we think we are, there are times when we just don't have an answer. It could be because we may not have seen the particular problem that you may be having. Your cooperation in going through steps on the phone with us and giving us as much information as possible goes a long way in helping us track down and hopefully solve the problems you may have. Our goal as technical support staff at GW Micro is to provide you with the best support possible.

* Rest assured that when a problem is reported to us we are keeping record of it. We have system designed to track problems and solutions. So when we don't have an answer, we'll mark it down. And if we find an answer, we'll let you know.

Finally, remember that the most important benefit you get from our support is that you will always get to talk to a live person. We do not have and have no plans to implement a voice mail system. You invested your money with us, and we, in turn will invest our time in helping you solve your problems.

Hi Chip. I agree with you about the payment plan. That is a very
fine, client centered service. I however, have had the exact
opposite service results. FS has always been patient and thorough
in helping me resolve my issues. I too am a licensed user of both
products with remaining SMAs. If you call GW after 4 P.M., you are
likely to be told that "I" cannot duplicate this problem. No
further suggestions nor encouragement is offered by Mr. Lollar.
That is why my Vista computers are running JAWS. Apparently, if it
aint't happening in Ft. Wayne, it is your problem. It would appear
that you and I have had the exact opposite result when we sought
assistance. I am not a programmer and I do not produce scripts,
but can you tell me if all scripts work for all of us? JMO thanks

ps I was a WE user first. Got my first license from Ferguson
Enterprises in SD. Taught myself how to use the product from
reading the WE 3 manual, but they use JAWS here at work. I
convinced them to use both products for teaching purposes and we
    offer both to our students.

Well, Chip, I am able to get the support from Freedom
Scientific, as they seem to like me as a friend, so they give
me the support. I have had tuns of support from them. For
example, when I bought a vista computer, I was able to get
Jaws running on it fine. One of the things I would try doing
before trying anything else, is that I would try again at
another day to get the support. For example, I am having a
problem with my PacMate where my wireless card isn't working
on it, so we need to phone Freedom Scientific support to get
the problem solved to get it working.

            Hi Dennis,

I switched from jaws, after about 10 years, to WE, about a
            year ago.

It's fine if you really want to contact me privately to
discuss this, but I'd suggest a public discussion is much
better. others could correct or disagree with any points I
would make, and they could add to anything I may have
forgotten. I think you'll get better info this way, and if
there are those who wish to say anything negative, and
they don't wish to say it on list, they can still contact
            you privately.

I switched because I found the FS customer service to be
completely unresponsive; and this was a condition which
continued over many instances spanning many years.

I also switched when I first read of the GW plans for
scripting. I could see immediately what a *huge* benefit
such a scripting system would be towards allowing many
            more programs to become accessible.

Not only is the GW scripting tool a fantastic tool for
making an application accessible, it's also a tool (if
you'll forgive the pun) which is accessible to the masses.
so, if you and a few others are using a program that's not
used by millions, and it has some accessibility problems,
it's very likely one of you could write and publish a
script to correct these problems. no more begging the
screen reader vendor to fix this program in the next
release, and being told by them that it's just not used by
enough of their customers to be worth the time of the
vendor. it's now in the hands of the users themselves.
            this is tremendously empowering!

            Yes, you could say jaws has the same scripting capability;
but, I tried for years to work with jaws scripts, and
found the entire process excruciatingly difficult, and
            poorly documented and/or supported.

And to prove my point, there has been an explosion of WE
scripts since the capability became available; I'd say
more than all jaws scripts ever published.

How has my own experience been as a WE user verses being a
            jaws user?

Well, I have a paid up copy of jaws with 2 SMAs, and I
haven't used it in about a year. that's the telling point
            I think.

I find the support to be much more responsive. are they
always right? if WE always the better screen reader for a
given program? well, no on both points. But, GW cares
about being right (helping you solve your problem), and
they care about making their product better. I think
they'd like to make some money along the way too.

In my opinion FS cares about making money; if they make
their product better along the way, how nice for you! but
it's not their motivation. You can see the difference in
the last (largely bug-fix) release of WE, which was free,
while pretty much every release of jaws has been a paid
upgrade, no matter how little new functionality was
            introduced.

I'm sure you could get down to the level of arguing which
            reader was the better reader application by application;
but seldom is this what decides anyone. most of us have to
use a wide range of applications, so that kind of
comparison is rarely helpful I think.

Finally, for those who aren't lucky enough to have someone
purchase your reader for you, GW offers a choice of
purchasing plans involving a series of small payments.
Last time I checked, FS had nothing like it; you simply
had to come up with all the money up front. if you aren't
sure about switching to WE, then why not rent it for a
month? shouldn't cost you too much to try it that way.

ok, I guess I've hit the high points for me as to why I
switched; let me know if you have any questions.

            hth,

            Chip
