I have an Asus netbook and disable the touch pad permanently with no issues.

I have Elantech smart-pad utility in my task tray. If I get into it and go
to the Elantech tab you can disable/enable the device.

Hello All:

Karyn and I like our Asus machines, with the one small but easy to deal with
fact we can't seem to permanently disable the touch pad. We use function-F3
to do it and it comes back on the next time one boots. Just have to
remember to do it when you turn on the machine.

I'd be careful of some of the Toshiba models as there are keys in very
unusual places, like the Tilde next to the space bar.

Thanks,
