Can't you permanantly disable the touchpad in the Mouse options within the Control Panel?

We use function-F3 to do it and it comes back on the next time one boots. Just have to remember to do it when you turn on the machine. I'd be careful of some of the Toshiba models as there are keys in very unusual places, like the Tilde next to the space bar.
