When you say that text to speech does not have to be enabled on your computer are you saying we can read it with Window-Eyes using the standard Kindle app rather than the Kindle app with accessibility? But regardless of which version of the app we use, is there any way to get more direct access to the text?

I often need to read books with the same amount of access as reading a text or Word document rather than just a page or screen at a time. And without being able to bring focus down from that level, i.e. navigate by character, word, line, sentence, etc. it's pretty much useless to me.

Pardon my ignorance, but I haven't the time or money to waste on a book reader that allows me to do nothing more than start and stop reading in a continuous stream, which has been my impression of the Kindle app. This is why I haven't bothered researching it or given it a try.

Thanks,
Tom

They sure sound better than the stream. Also, text to speech does not

and books that won't read on it, do read on the computer, although I'd
prefer to use the kindle itself.

Also, the publisher has to agree to allow the TTS feature to be enabled.

The Kindle app is not the most ideal way to read books, but it certainly
is accessible. Just make sure that you download the Kindle app with
accessibility. It is a much larger file than the regular Kindle of PC
app, as it includes its own tts voices. The voices are Samantha and Tom,
same as the stream, though I understand that they are a different
version that what is on the Stream. Previously, W-E users needed to
install the QT Support app, but I don't believe it is necessary with the
current version of W-E. The main reason the Kindle app is not ideal, is
because you don't have as much control over navigation, and can't review
passages with the cursor. To me, it is perfectly fine for pleasure
reading, but not so fine for something you are trying to learn.

Hey, just wondering, since there's a book I want to read that is
only in ebook format, can I just get the Kindle App from Amazon?
Is there anything special I need to do to make sure it's maximally
accessible with Window Eyes when I install it?
Thanks much.
Evan
