Hi. The first thing to try is to use the usual key strokes used for shutting down. For example in Windows 7 press start, then right arrow once to shutdown and press enter or spacebar. This sometimes will not work if things are really hung up. I made a change on all my machines in the power options. I changed the option to shutdown when the power option is pressed. This has performed a graceful shupdown in some cases. This setting works for me because I do not use sleep or hybernation. This may not work if you have an unsaved word doc open. Windows just won't shut down if the save dialog is up. Good luck.
