True, but I barely even thought this was not an option :) Mac OS X
isn't free either unfortunately :(

As points I would say: delivered XCode, delivered OS X + automatic
updates - to keep the barrier as low as possible ;)

Otherwise many people have to sign in on ADC (Apple developer
connection) to get their open source programms working ...
(But this would be more an topic for macports mailing lists ;)

Q: From your answer, it seems that gwyddion works under 10.5.5
with XCode 3.1.2 (and XQuartz)?

Yes, but I did not compile Gwyddion too recently (not with the new
xcode). It still runs fine after recompiling the new gtk version...
if desired I guess I could uninstall it and recompile to check (I have
access to a linux install too so it wouldn't really matter if it
broke).

Would be nice for testing after I've fixed the bugs. Jeremy
Huddleston, who is the new X11 maintainer in macports gave
one suggestion which I will try tomorrow. It would also be nice
if Eric tests the fixed Portfile on his PPC before I'll commit it on
macports ;)

Umm, presumably I am using xquartz as I am just using the default
apple X11 (as far as I know?). "About X11" tells me: "Xquartz 2.1.5 -
(xorg-server 1.3.0-apple22) (2.1.5)"

Maybe that isn't the latest xquartz version.

It's the Xquartz 2.2.3, relabled to 2.1.5 (by apple) the latest one is 2.3.1

PS: (a little Off-Topic): it can be usefull to check you gcc on the debian-
system with the fftw3 issue. One reason for installing an own fftw can
be that so has installed his own gcc before (I did this while my diploma-thesis
to get an gcc which supports openmp (numerical physics))
