The progression of the Jews in Germany in learning the German language included using the Hebrew characters to write in the language they were learning. It has nothing to do with self-hatred. It was a transitional way of easing them into an unfamiliar language which they needed to acquire in order to become full-fledged members of the society in which they lived.
